Code Conference moved into the enterprise this afternoon, with a joint session between Marc Benioff and Aneel Bhusri, chief executives of two leading cloud software companies.
Workday’s Bhusri said that we’re quickly moving toward a post-server world, where just about every business application will operate in the cloud rather than on-premise. Earlier this month, Buhsri became the sole CEO of the company, which offers a set of online tools for managing human resources and recruitment.
“In 15 years, I don’t think you’re going to be hearing about people talking about HR or sales on premise.”

Salesforce.com’s Benioff echoed the grand promise of the cloud. But he used most of his time to call on tech businesses and execs to give back to their communities, saying it was the best way to address the swelling anti-tech tensions in cities like San Francisco. His targets included Re/code’s own Kara Swisher — and, for that matter, every company in the crowd.
Benioff and his wife, Lynne, have become among the biggest philanthropists in tech. They’ve now made two separate $100 million grants to UC San Francisco children’s hospitals, donated nearly $3 million to San Francisco’s middle schools and have pushed tech execs to support a series of other causes.
