Box, the enterprise-focused cloud storage and platform company, named Cisco Systems’ CTO and chief strategy officer Padmasree Warrior to its board of directors, taking another step toward an IPO that’s expected before the summer.

Warrior is a seven-year veteran of the networking hardware giant and before that was CTO at Motorola.

Box CEO Aaron Levie announced the appointment in a corporate blog post. “I’ve gotten to know Padma over the past two years, and I’ve continued to lean on her expertise when it comes to building out large technology operations, establishing new routes to market, and competing in dynamic markets,” he wrote.

He went on to write about Box’s plan to evolve from a strictly storage and collaboration-based company to more of an enterprise platform company, which he will discuss at the company’s developers conference next week.

Box is reported to have filed for an initial public offering under the confidentiality of the federal JOBS Act. It’s expected to debut for trading sometime during the second quarter of this year. Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse and J.P. Morgan Chase are said to be running the process.

Warrior is joining a board with considerable large-company experience. Gary Reiner, the former CIO of GE and now an operating partner at the private equity firm General Atlantic joined Box’s board in 2012 when that firm led a $150 million investment in Box. Reiner is also a director at Hewlett-Packard.

Box’s other independent director is Dana Evan, the former CFO of Verisign who sat on the board of Omniture before it was acquired by Adobe.
