News Brief

An update going live next week will let users of Starbucks’ popular iPhone app give tips to their baristas via their phones and receive digital receipts. The updated app will also include functionality that displays a customer’s barcode for payment scanning when the customer shakes the phone.

In the UK, Starbucks has been falling behind Costa Coffee. When a sandwich or panini is toasted at Starbucks, on several occasions I've now had the same experience. The staff will just shout out that it is ready, then take it down the counter, to the designated pick-up spot even if that means walking away from the direction the customer is coming from and making me the customer have to walk further. At Costa, they bring it to your table and they call you "Sir." Not that I mind if I'm not called Sir or expect that I should be, but the fact at Costa they do it, shows they are trying harder and deserve my custom.

I don't expect I will be using the Starbucks app tipping function. I would do at Costa if they make the same kind of app.

I really like this in multiple ways and can't wait to play with it.  I know myself I no longer use the Starbucks App since I can buy my Chai Tea in the mornings with Passbook.  Has Starbucks seen a big decrease of the App usage since Passbook integration was born and is this a way to get more customers into their App?
