News Brief

Mobile ad network Millennial Media has hired ad veteran Michael Barrett as its new CEO. Barrett replaces Millennial’s founder Paul Palmieri, who will join New Enterprise Associates as a venture adviser. Barrett’s resume includes stints as chief revenue officer at Yahoo, AOL and Fox Interactive Media; he was also CEO at Admeld prior to that company’s acquisition by Google. In November, Millennial finished its acquisition of Jumptap, a rival ad network.

MM needed a new start, so this is good. In the last few years, they've lost their reputation as mobile advertising's innovation leaders. Airpush has sort of captured that role by doing what MM used to do and will hopefully do again - innovate, innovate, and innovate. Developers are finding better places to monetize their apps, period. And MM has to stop the bleeding.

I've had the pleasure of working and partnering with both of these gentlemen over the years, and can't say enough positive things about either one.

A special word about Paul:  starting with sports scores via SMS in 2002, Paul envisioned a multi-billion dollar industry and then -- one brick at a time -- began to construct it from scratch.  There are few people out there who could lead a massive enterprise like Verizon into a new era, and then go on to hatch a publically-traded company from an org chart scribbled on a white board.

At the end of the day, people are what matter.  Paul and Michael are, above all, good people.
