Spain’s Geeksphone is teaming up with a Washington, D.C.-based security company to create Blackphone, an Android phone it promises will be more secure than others on the market.
The device, which uses a security-oriented build of Android dubbed PrivatOS, will be shown off at next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with preorders starting Feb. 24.
It’s being built by Geeksphone, which developed the first FirefoxOS developer handsets, working with Silent Circle, a firm that includes PGP creator Phil Zimmerman.
“What we are trying to do is to make a smartphone whose whole purpose is to protect users’ privacy,” Zimmerman said in a teaser video.
The device will be sold unlocked and will work with any GSM carrier, Blackphone said on its website.
