News Brief

The mother of a 6-year-old girl struck and killed by an Uber-affiliated driver in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve wants the company held responsible for the accident, according to the San Francisco Business Times. Victim Sofia Liu’s mother, Huan Kuang, who was also injured in the incident along with her 5-year-old son, told the newspaper she is looking for legal representation and will seek compensation for medical bills and more. Complicating the issue is that Uber, which operates a mobile app connecting private drivers with customers in need of a ride, doesn’t officially employ its drivers.

One can have sympathy for this mother's loss and the demise of her child, but 13 days after this happened that is clear that the driver did not have a Uber fare in his car at the time the accident occurred.  Senator Dianne Feinstein (for example) is about as liable for the death and injury as Uber would be.  Perhaps she should attempt to sue the radio station the driver was listening to?

It's terrible that this accident occurred, but the idea that the person who committed the act isn't responsible, and we just look for some related party with deep pockets, is ridiculous.  Most people are too young to remember, but this really took off when lawyers were allowed to advertise.

According to the linked article, the driver was not driving for Uber at the time of the accident. I really wish our culture was not sue happy.

@Drew R She's "not of our culture" because she is an immigrant from China.  She only half-understands what is happening, because otherwise, she would have first found an attorney willing to take on this non-case.

@Drew R  Agree. Laws get passed and people sue. Someone gets hit and mothers sue. iPod nano scratches and geeks sue.
