Apple confirmed to Re/code that it has bought SnappyLabs, but declined to comment further on the deal.
SnappyLabs had sold the SnappyCam app — which allows the internal iPhone camera to take high-resolution images rapidly — in the App Store. It was founded by John Papandriopoulos.
Improving photo capabilities on smartphones is a focus of all the big players, and developers adept at creating such features are valuable to them. The technology from SnappyLabs could presumably be used on all of Apple’s devices, such as the iPad.
In a statement, an Apple spokesperson declined to be more specific and said that, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
The SnappyLabs deal was first reported by TechCrunch, which was unable to confirm the acquisition with Apple.
